The Mayakoba Classic golf tournament began in 2007 with Fred Funk as the in inaugral winner. At the second event in the tournament’s history, American golfer Brian Gay took the title along with $ 630,000.00 in prize money – his earnings hit a sharp decline at the 2009 Mayakoba Classic when he earned a low $ 36,315.00.

Mark Wilson claimed his second PGA tour title as the 2009 Mayakoba Classic winner and pocketed $ 648,000.00 in prize money, as well as 250 FedEx Cup points. JJ Henry finished in second place and was awarded a cheque of $ 388,800.00, and 150 FedEx Cup points.

In 2007 Fred Funk won on the second hole of a playoff with Argentine Jose Coceres, becoming only the second golfer ever to win a PGA Tour event after also having won the Champions Tour. Funk also won the Mexico Open in 1993.

The 51-year-old led the tournament after setting a course record with an 8 under 62 in the first round. He closed with a 1 over 71 to match Coceres (69) at 14 under 266 to claim the winner’s $630 000 purse. It was his eighth PGA Tour victory.
