Mayakoba Golf Classic - Riviera Maya, Mexico
The El Camaleon Golf Course in Mayakoba is host to the 2009 Mayakoba Golf Classic.
Mayakoba is situated in the Riviera Maya, Mexico. The Riviera Maya is a corridor that runs from the famous Playa del Carmen to the town of Tulum on the Caribbean side of Mexico, following highway 307 south from Cancun. The Riviera Maya is known for its white-sand tropical beaches, coral reefs, all-inclusive resorts and, of course, for the world-class golf tournaments it hosts. It’s also known for its fresh water cenotes - or sinkholes, which provided the ancient Mayans in the area with their main source of water.
Riviera Maya Resorts
Unlike in Cancun, development in the Riviera Maya is controlled by the Mexican Government. Resorts can’t exceed three storeys and must blend with their local surroundings and vegetation, ensuring that the area keeps its status as a tourist paradise. Some of the more popular resort chains in the Riviera Maya include Palace Resorts, Iberostar Resorts and Secrets Resorts & Spas.
Mayakoba itself is about a 40-minute drive south of Cancun. It includes five luxury hotels, of which Fairmont Hotels & Resorts - which manages the El Camaleon Golf Course - is one. The other resorts include Laguna Kai, Banyan Tree, the Viceroy and La Casa Que Canta. Mayakoba and its resorts are criss-crossed by a series of lagoons, with mangrove swamps leading to the Caribbean sea.
