Although the event only started in 2007, we can provide some Mayakoba Golf Classic trivia for your interest and enjoyment:

  • The inaugral winner of the tournament, Frederick Funk, is a popular golfer. His fans are known as “Funk’s Punks” and they have a theme tune for him, namely “Play that Funky Music”.
  • Funk is remembered for wearing a pink skirt to satisfy a friendly bet during the 2005 Skins game.
  • Greg Norman, who designed the Mayakoba Classic golf course was ranked as the number one golfer in the world for 331 weeks in the 1980s and 1990s. He was known as “The Great White Shark” for his large size and blonde hair.
  • The course winds its way through three landscapes: tropical forest, dense mangroves and beach sands.
  • The El Camaleón resort offers a unique feature whereby golfers can travel from their accommodation to the first tee in a thatch-roofed boat, via a canal system.
  • The Mayakoba Golf Classic is the richest golf event in Mexico, with a purse of US$3.5 million in 2007.

  • Mary, Queen of Scots, is the first recorded lady golfer. She played both at St Andrews and in Edinburgh in 1563 and was chastised for playing golf only a few days after the murder of her husband, Lord Darnley.
  • Jack Nicklaus became the youngest and oldest player to win the Masters in 1963 and 1986.
  • Japanese, Isao Aoki, is the only player to have won events on the PGA Tour, the Senior Tour, the Japanese, European and Australian Tours.
  • King James 11 banned golf in 1457 as it was competing favourably with the likes of archery, swordsmanship and other defensive skills.
  • Gary Player was the first foreign player to win the Masters in 1961.
  • Tiger Woods won the US Masters Golf Tournament in 1997 in his first year as a professional!

  • There are currently only 6 Argentine golfers in the top 300 of the World Ranking and between them they have won 11 titles on the US and European tours.
  • In the last 25 years, only 4 non-Americans have taken the PGA Championship title – Nick Price (2), Vijay Singh (2), Steve Elkington and Wayne Grady.
  • Vijay Singh has tied the most victories by an international player on the PGA Tour with 31.
  • The three richest tournaments in world golf in 2007 are The Players (total purse $9 million, 1st prize $1 620 000), The Open (total purse $8.4 million, 1st prize $1 500 000) and WGC Match Play (total purse $8 million, 1st prize $1 350 000).
  • Scottish Golf Club Loch Lomond charges R781 000 to join the distinguished club, which boasts members such as Sir Jackie Stewart and Sir Sean Connery.
  • India was the first country outside Great Britain to take up the game of golf.
  • Tiger Woods currently demands an appearance fee of $3 million per tournament
  • Dennis Quaid plays off a 1 handicap, Justin Timberlake off a 6, Hugh Grant off a 7 and Catherine Zeta-Jones off a 24, whereas her husband, Michael Douglas, plays off a 15.
  • Seve Ballesteros was disqualified from the 1980 US Open Golf Championship when he was late for his tee off time.
  • Jack Nicklaus is second to Sam Snead in PGA Tour wins.
  • Hootie and the Blowfish played at Tiger Wood’ wedding.
  • The Masters was not played in 1943, 1944 or 1945 during World War 11. Turkeys and cattle were bred on the Augusta course instead!
  • There are 336 dimples on a regulation golf ball.
