Expect another solid performance from Rhys Davies

Posted on by godadnet

This week could be a special week for Luke Donald, he is attempting to make it two wins in eight days at the Wales Open.

Last week he managed an eagle at the par five 16th on the Sunday, to card a one shot victory over  Wales’ Rhys Davies (20/1) in the Madrid Masters.

It should be the first of two trips that Donald (12/1) makes to Celtic Manor this year, the way he is playing he should be playing for Europe’s Captain Colin Montgomerie (150/1) in the Ryder Cup.

It is only four months away and the venue must be stirring thoughts in some player’s minds.

The week before Madrid, Luke Donald managed to finish second behind Simon Khan (60/1) in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

At  12/1, his form reflects the price. He will want another solid performance, so he can continue to catch Montgomerie’s eye.

Montgomerie will be disappointed that some of Europe’s bigger players have stayed away from Celtic Manor this week, Donald and Kaymer (16/1) are the only contestants ranked inside the world’s top-30.

Had the event been held the week after Wentworth, it would have definitely attracted some higher profile names.

However, the absence of these stars could offer an opportunity to lesser established names in the market.

Rhys Davies is playing in his rookie season on the European Tour and he is starting to become a household name.

Had Luke Donald not been so good in Madrid, he would have won his second title this year. He was tied seventeenth here last year and finished top Welshman.  With the home fans behind him, the in-form pro could reverse last week’s form with Donald.

Golfer Chris Wood (25/1) is still trying to get over the disappointment of his final round at the PGA Championship. He seemed to revel  in-front of the big British crowd and he is sure to learn from the experience.  After leading a high quality field at Wentworth, it would not be a surprise to see him in the running at Celtic Manor.

Danny Willet has had some top-ten finishes in his short professional career and he was the World Amateur No.1 in March 2008. He showed his huge potential with a fifth place finish at The PGA Championship and if he harnesses his amateurish mistakes, he could be good value at 25/1.

An outside bet with each-way value could be Gareth Maybin at 70/1, he is having a fantastic season. He has three top-ten finishes on the European Tour and he qualified for his maiden appearance in a major at the US Open. He is fresh after opting out of the Madrid Masters last week.
